Blogging Ain’t Easy

Here I am already in my second week since I relaunched my blog “Into the Digital Light” and all I have are repost from my previous blog.  I have been trying these past few days to come up with an article and yet I never really gone through the introduction stage.  For the past few days I have been blaming the holiday spirit and my mind is still in party mode.  Mind you, the Christmas holiday season is quite long here in the Philippines since Christmas is not really over till the feast of the Three Kings which this year falls on January 6, 2013. Call it an excuse but it’s a good one anyway.

I stand corrected in my earlier post that I started blogging in 2008.  Today I started going through my old stuff and found out that I became an internet café owner in October of 2005 and was able to organize the Internet Café Association of Imus, Inc. in May of 2006. So more or less the first blog post that I was able to do came at around August or September of 2006 that was before the first ICT Training Seminar that ICAII had organized for the teachers of the province of Cavite in October, 2006.  Those were the glory days of blogging for me.  I used to do two or three articles a day if I was in the mood and at the same time do some other writing chores like coming up with a newsletter.

It was easy during those days because I had a theme and an advocacy.  Writing about the state of the internet café industry in the Philippines became a passion and at the same time my own personal advocacy. There were a lot of challenges back then and even up to today I still believe that it’s the industry that really started Information Communication Technology in the Philippines since it basically introduced the computer to a great part of the population.

Maybe this is the primary reason why I am having a hard time starting to write again.  I need to find again my voice.  I need to find my place in this world of technology to where I believe would provide the opportunities for a better future. Blogging is not really a job but it’s a passion, finding and defining oneself in this world that we call as the internet.

Heck its back to work….Epiphany is over tomorrow and no more excuses for me.

Piso Net, Is Really that Easy?

The Piso Net as a business model is taking off and the proof of this is that big companies are taking notice and started creating a marketing campaign based on this model. The Piso Net model involves setting up of internet kiosk terminals in different places where people could get internet access. The computer units are individually placed in specially built cabinets and is managed by a coin operated timer that turns off the monitor once the time is up. Need more time just insert more coins in the system. Depending on the preference of the operator the Piso Net system accepts One Peso, Five Peso, Ten Peso or all of these coins. For a One Peso coin one could get on the average about four (4) minutes of internet access. Some internet cafe owners have opted also to operate a Piso Net system along side of their regular internet cafe. Through a 60 – 40 percent partnership arrangement with the site owner they are able to operate more internet access sites with a minimum sup...

Are Internet Cafes....Conclusion

Basically through the years there have been a lot of things that has been written on how to succeed in this industry.   Mostly it was very technical but failed to discuss the most important thing. Have a clear vision of your target market.   One of the factors why most internet cafés fails is that they are only catering to a particular target market which is gaming.   This is understandable since this is the traditional target market of internet cafes but if you are going to go to that market one must understand how to attract gamers who will pay extra for the services that you would offer.   One of the biggest mistakes of an internet café owner is thinking that there is only a Php10.00 market and they could not raise their prices on computer rental per hour.   Once your frame of mind is based on this then you would only attract the kind of market that you thought that only existed.   The challenge is how to attract those people who are willing t...

Internet Cafes as eLearning Centers During the Covid19 Pandemic – Issues and Challenges

In the last few days. I’ve been hearing of several educational initiatives on how schools will conduct learning activities for the school year 2020 – 2021.    The   Corona19 pandemic puts a big challenge to schools on how to continue their operations and ensure that children would continue learning. Face to face in classroom learning is dangerous right now without the vaccine needed to control Covid19.   Alternative, Modular, Online or, Cloud learning are now being floated around as an alternative to Face to Face in classroom learning. School children will spend more of their time at home and have their learning modules delivered to them through the various educational platforms that are now available.           One of the most interesting news lately is that congress is studying at the possibility of creating a law that would make internet cafes as centers for distance learning for the poor that don’t have interne...
