Its been quite a while since I used a Linux operating system. I've
been working for a computer hardware company for several years and
mostly we are using Windows in our daily operations. Every now and
then I've installed an Ubuntu system just to try it out but after
Lucid Lynx it seems that they are coming out with some weird stuff
that it totally turned me off in using it.
A few days back I've decided to give it one more try. It was
actually an act of my consience catching up with me. During the
weekend I was invited to do a presentation about Free and Open Source
Software during the Software Freedom Day Celebration in Olivarez
College in Tagaytay City and I used my laptop installed with a
Windows system during the presentation. It was kind of weird but
nobody seem to notice.
Since I was not interested in learning the new Ubuntu interface I've
decided to install Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon and I was amazed that it
has retained most of original features. It was easy to install and
the interface is user friendly that even those who have not yet
familiar with the system would be using it with ease. It boots up
quickly compared to the old versions. The taskbar is still located
at the bottom thus minimizing problems with orientation since most
people are familiar with the Windows system having the task bar
located on top of the screen causes a lot of confussion. It still
retains the menu botton which you could have access to all of your
favorite software in one location. What I love about it the most is
that it retains the software that is commonly used by everyone
(Firefox, VLC, Pidgin, Libre Office, Gimp, ect) as its default
installation. Firefox comes with a flash player no more configuration
needed. Everyting comes out of the box just ready to install and use
that an ordinary user will not be able to have problems shifting from
a Windows System. There are just two things about it that I believe
it lacks. One is that unlike Ubuntu that could provide extra boost
with the speaker volume thus making it play louder, in Linux Mint it
is still only at 100% level no difference with the Windows sytem.
Firefox default search engine is Yahoo, I prefer Google.
